Why Is Goal Setting Important?
Why is goal setting important? The theory of goal setting suggests that we benefit from setting performance goals for ourselves in all areas of our lives.
Advantages of Goal Setting
Setting goals gives you focus. It gives you something to work towards, a sense of direction, a reason to get out of bed in the morning. When you are working towards a goal that is important to you, you will face each day with purpose, with something to look forward to.
Without goals, a dream or a vision you will find it difficult to stay motivated. You may drift aimlessly through life. Without direction or purpose you will not have a great deal of drive or ambition. How can you if you have nothing to get excited about.
We are all happier and driven when we have something to aim for. Goal setting is important because it enables us to define what is important to us. We can then develop a plan of action to allow us to achieve the goals that we have set for ourselves.
Goal Definition - So What Is A Goal?
Put simply a goal is anything that you want to have or achieve in your life. Goals can be short term, mid term or long term. They can range from simple and easily achievable to the more difficult and complex. Generally we will have a major long term goal or 'life' goal with some smaller and perhaps easier to reach goals as our short term focus. As you begin to achieve your short term goals you will usually find that this is moving you closer towards your longer term goals. Most people have goals that they want to achieve in the different areas of their lives; career or business goals, financial goals, family and relationship goals, fitness or sporting goals, spiritual goals and recreational goals.
Theory Of Goal Setting
All successful people are goal setters. If you truly strive to be successful and achieve your dreams then you must adopt this principle. Successful people use this method long before they become successful. It is one of the major reasons that they achieve their success. There is an old Chinese Proverb which says 'if you don't know where you're going, any road will get you there'. High achievers understand this. They realize that having goals in place allows you to take advantage of opportunities that present themselves. They understand that without knowing where you are headed you will not recognize opportunities when they appear.
