What Is Business Management?

What is business management? Business management or small business administration involves organizing paperwork and developing record keeping systems. It is about controlling and directing the organization's activities.

Many small business owners are surprised at the time spent organizing paperwork. Larger companies will usually appoint managers to handle the various areas of small business administration. For example they might appoint an Administration Manager, a Finance Manager, a Production Manager and so on.

Smaller businesses usually don't have this luxury. As a small business owner you will wear many hats. You will be the admin manager, finance manager and the production manager. You will also be responsible for hiring staff and managing staff. As a new business owner your business management skill will be tested.

Organizational Goal Setting

Even if you're 'office' is only some stationary and a calculator on your dining room table, your business will still generate lots of paperwork. The sooner that you get the paperwork under control the sooner you can get on with goal setting activities and setting business goals.

All small business administration tasks must be monitored and processed in a timely manner. It is important that you implement small business administration policies and procedures early on in your business.

Don't underestimate the importance of developing business management skills or business management practices.

Whatever your reasons for going into business it probably isn't to spend your time organizing paperwork. But dealing with it efficiently is essential if you want to succeed.

You should aim to minimise the time spent on administration so that you can concentrate on working 'on' your business rather than 'in' it. The majority of your time should be spent on tasks that will make you money. What tasks are the most profitable for you?

How to Organize Paperwork

When it comes to business management you will achieve more and in less time by being organized.

To help reduce the time spent on administration you should:

  • implement a policy and procedure manual
  • devote a regular time each week to deal with organizing the paperwork. Make it a regular appointment in your diary and stick to it.
  • Use templates whenever possible for invoices, letters etc anything that you do regularly. Templates are great time savers and are great for achieving a consistent look.
  • If you have staff, make use of human resource forms and templates to minimize the time spent processing paperwork.
