Recruiting Employees

Do you know how to do an interview? When recruiting employees what are the best interview questions to ask? Often small business owners will ask typical job interview questions. Just because they are typical or commonly used, it doesn't meant that they are good.

Do you own or manage a business?

Are you responsible for recruiting employees? Even if you have conducted
interviews before, did it feel comfortable? Do you think that you may have asked inappropriate interview questions or even worse, illegal interview questions.

Did you feel that the whole process could have ran a little more smoothly? If so then you are not alone.

There were over 1.8 million small businesses operating within Australia in 2007. (Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics - 2007).

Many of these businesses were established by people similar to yourself.
They had a particular skill or a hobby that they loved and decided to turn that hobby into a business. As a result of that passion their business has grown. Most of their business skills are gained on the job. This is a common scenario.

However, being passionate about your hobby or your 'craft' as such, doesn't always mean that you have the necessary skills necessary for recruiting employees.

Many small businesses are one or two person operations. The owner or manager often has little training or experience in things like
how to interview, or manage staff. Unfortunately it also means that at times the wrong person is selected for the job which later results in you having to fire staff.

Unfortunately some employers never recognise the importance of implementing an effective recruitment strategy.

For your business to grow to its fullest potential you need to
attract great people to your business and once hired you then
need to retain great people!
