How Make
Your Own Website

Step One

Want to know how make your own website and avoid common beginner web design mistakes? Don't miss this checklist for the things you need to do before you start to build web pages.

'How make your own website' or how to make your own website is a common search term of interntet users. It is one of the most asked questions in internet forums and small business networking meetings around the world.

This article explains the things that you should know before you start. By doing so you can define what you want to gain from having a website and you will be better informed when making decisions that will ultimately affect your online success.

Aim of your website

Decide what you want to achieve. This will depend on what type of business you are in. Will you be selling e-goods or hard goods. Will you be selling a service or are you an internet auction seller? Do you have a bricks and mortar store? Are you getting a website because everybody else has one?

Are you selling a service? With professional services in particular, for example accountants or pyschologists, it is becoming more expected. Many deem you to be more credible if you have a website, even though this isn't always the case.

What are your expectations

What are your expectations in regard to traffic. Traffic is a term used to describe the number of visitors to your site. People searching the internet will choose a site from the search results page of Google (or other search engines such as Yahoo, Bing, Ask). Once they arrive at your site they become a visitor.

How many pages will you need?

You may not know at this stage exactly how many pages you will need or want to have on your site. Try to come up with a rough estimate though as some of the 'make your own website free' offers are limited in what they provide.

What type of image
do you want to project?

Do you need e-zine (newsletter) facilities? Will you need a shopping cart or online shop. Will you need to upload your own graphics or videos? Again these are important considerations if you want to make a free website. Often these free website builders will not provide you with all that you need to create a professional site or one that will be competitive.

Will you be 'blogging'. Blogging may or may not be the ideal situation for your business. Again it depends on what you want to achieve. If you are looking at building a professional site with low start up costs and want a step by step proven system and all of the tools and resources that you will ever need there are ways to do so.

One way is with a product called SBI. You can compare SBI to other small business web hosting solutions here.

What is your budget?

Do you need to keep your content fresh and up-to-date? Can you make updates to the site yourself. If not how much will it cost for this service. Can you afford to pay an on-going fee for updates to your site.

Web designers

The amount of money that you pay for a site has little bearing on the success of the end product. There are some great designers out there, I even know a few myself. But having a pretty or great looking site will not pay the bills. You need people to look at it. And the more that look the better!

The search engines

Your ultimate aim is to have your pages found on the first or second page of Google (and the other engines) search results pages.

When looking for information on how make your own website find a company that has a solid reputation and one that can back up its claims with testimonials and case studies from happy customers!
