Job Interviewing
The Aim of the Interview
The aim of the interview is to find out each applicant’s skills and experience in relation to the position being filled.
It is only after assessing each applicants knowledge and skill level can you then choose the most qualified and suitable person for the job.
Unfortunately many interviewers do not prepare a list of questions that relate specifically to the job being filled.
Why Most Interviews don't Result in the Best Person for the Job
Most interviews do not achieve their aim. Why?Because the person doing the interviewing has a bit of a chat with each applicant and often the person selected is the one that the interviewer liked talking to the most. Often this ‘talk’ has nothing at all to do with the job, or the skills necessary to perform in it. And this applies to most organisations: it isn’t the best applicant that gets the job; it is the person who appears to be the best applicant.
Many people are nervous at interviews and do not perform at their best. But if they are good at their job they can usually talk about it with some degree of authority. They may be nervous in the way that they present themselves but they will be clear on the detail.Your job as the interviewer is to make applicants feel at ease. You will gain more information from someone when they are relaxed. Put them at ease so that you can get the best from them. You will make your task much easier if you prepare a list of interview questions that relate specifically to the job you are filling. Your conversation with job applicants should revolve around these questions. Many inexperienced interviewers will spend ten minutes talking about fishing or football. Then hire the person because ‘he seems like a good bloke’. Well he may well be, but that doesn’t mean that he is the best person for the job. Remember you are running a business. You need to hire staff that will bring the right set of skills and abilities to your business.
