Advantages Of Working From Home

And Some Disadvantages Too!

There are many advantages of working from home. Unfortunately some of these advantages can become disadvantages if we are not disciplined or focussed on the job at hand.

The list below offers advantages of working from home along with some disadvantages. Some of these points can fall into either category. It will depend on you, your personality and your circumstances.

Advantages

freedom to set your own hours

no commuting time or travel costs

no expensive lease payments

generally you will have less overheads

you can work around your childrens, or grandchildrens', school hours and sleeping patterns

you will often have lower establishment costs
. There is usually less work involved in setting up a work from home business. Even if you need to make some modifications it is generally easier and less costly to set up a business from home than it is to hire commercial or professional premises which you will then need to fit out to suit your own requirements.
you will generally be more productive when working from home as you will not be dealing with 'office politics' or having half hour long coffee breaks with your co-workers.

Disadvantages

depending on your work from home situation your business may appear less professional than if you were operating from professional offices or commercial premises.

you can become distracted by the 'goings on' of the household. Try to have a designated office or work area so that you are able to work without distractions.

it is great to be at home for your children but to succesfully combine parenthood, or 'grandparenthood' and a work from home business, you must teach your children that there are times when you are working and are not available.

you may struggle with the isolation of a work from home business. But depending on your personality this could actually be an advantage for you.

if your business is successful and experiences rapid growth you may outgrow your premises. You may then require additional space for inventory or customers and clients. You might require additional office space for extra staff. Though that type of growth would then surely be considered an advantage!
friends and family may look at your work from home business as just a hobby or 'little business'. They may call in unannounced and expect you to drop everything as they do not understand that your business is your 'real job'.

NOTE

If you are well organised and disciplined, which you will need to be to succeed at a work from home business, you can schedule your work so that you can allow time for unexpected interuptions. Don't let this become a habit though as some may take advantage of it.

If you are disciplined and determined to succeed than the advantages of working from home will far exceed the disadvantages.
