About Business Administration

Business Management Technique

Some points about Business Administration and how to improve yours.

Much of your business success is going to be directly related to your business management technique and your business management practices.

As a business owner or manager you are responsible for the future direction of your business. You need to keep things running smoothly. If you don’t, you will soon find that your business will suffer.

You need to organise your office space. You should implement control systems to deal with the paperwork and transactions that your business generates. Even the smallest business can produce large amounts of paperwork.

When you are first starting out in business you may be unsure about exactly what administration tasks will be required.

Business Management Practices

Basically you will need policies and procedures in place for each of the key areas of your business. A policy or procedure is simply the way a particular process or set of tasks will be performed.

Are there other people involved in the administration and management of your business? If so it is recommended that you take the time to document the main procedures specific to your business. If everyone is working to the same set of guidelines it reduces the opportunity for error.

Procedures Manual

When setting up a procedures manual it is a good idea to make a list of the main tasks performed by your business. You should have a process in place for dealing with each of the main administrative areas:
  • Customers
  • Suppliers
  • Products/services that you provide
  • Staffing
  • Income and expenses
  • Credits and returns

Depending on your particular business there could be other areas that you need to cover. But the administration tasks in most businesses will fall into one of the above categories.

The extent to which you perform these tasks yourself will depend on:

  • Your level of administration experience,
  • Your business and the industry you are in,
  • Whether you have staff employed to perform these tasks – or if you can engage a contractor.

Sometimes we are better off sticking with our strengths and paying for some outside help in the areas where we might be lacking. For example a competent tradesperson would be better off engaging a bookkeeper once a month to do the books rather than trying to do it themselves.

Similarly a competent bookkeeper would usually be better of employing a tradesperson to fix the bathroom.

So if you are still feeling that Administration is a bit beyond you then consider sticking with your strengths.

And when possible hire some who knows all about business administration who can assist you with the areas of your business that you may be a little weak in.
